Cool Planet Project

The Climate Registry administers an energy efficiency and climate change mitigation program called the Cool Planet Project with electric and gas utilities throughout North America. The Cool Planet Project highlights the relationship between energy usage and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, providing utility company business customers assistance in measuring, verifying, and reporting their GHG emissions profile, in exchange for installing energy efficiency (EE) projects that save a minimum threshold of energy on an annual basis. The largest commercial, industrial, and local governmental utility company customers participate in the program and learn to manage their carbon footprint through utility paid membership to The Registry.

Program Benefits to Utility Company

  • Demonstrates environmental leadership and best practices in energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions
  • Supports state and regional energy policy and goals, which promote EE as a cost-effective means for tackling climate change
  • Effectively markets existing EE programs by relating them to climate change
  • Provides climate change education and training to utility staff and their customers
  • Strong EE programs save utilities from investing in new power plants or imported energy
