Cool Planet Award

Recognizing Excellence in Energy & Carbon Management

The Cool Planet Award recognizes the valuable contribution of Southern California Edison business customers who demonstrate exemplary leadership in energy and carbon management within their business size and industry. A customer recognition ceremony is held in the fall each year. Award recipients are honored with a plaque made out of recycled glass inscribed with their company name. The Cool Planet Awards Ceremony is an exceptional event that celebrates SCE’s business customers and their commitment to installing energy efficiency projects, participating in demand response programs, and implementing environmental and GHG management systems.

Leading By Example: California Agencies Help Cool the Planet

This video was premiered at the 2015 Cool Planet Award Ceremony on Friday, October 16, 2015.   “Leading by Example – California Agencies Help Cool the Planet” highlights the progress of state agencies in California to meet Governor Jerry Brown’s Executive Order B-18-12.  B-18-12 issued in April of 2012, which requires all state agencies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 percent by 2015 and 20 percent by 2020, as measured against a 2010 baseline.  Energy and water efficiency improvements in state buildings and operations reduce state operating costs and help boost California’s economy by investing in green technology companies and green jobs. The energy used in buildings accounts for the second largest contribution to California greenhouse gas emissions.  Three of California’s state agencies (Departments of General Services, Transportation, and Corrections & Rehabilitation) account for over 50% of the agencies’ total emissions and are featured in this video. You’ll hear how these three agencies have worked and are working with Southern California Edison to meet the goals of the Executive Order and describe their future plans as well.  They are “walking the walk” and setting an example for what can be accomplished in California in a big way.

Together the 2015 Cool Planet Award recipients have saved nearly 44 million kilowatt-hours since January 2010 through the implementation of various SCE energy efficiency projects, which is equivalent to removing the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of 4,500 homes in one year.  In addition the 2015 Cool Planet Award recipients actively participate in numerous SCE Demand Response programs, which provide incentives for them to reduce their electricity use during peak electrical demand periods.  This integrated demand side energy management approach provides both environmental and economic benefits to businesses and local governments in Southern California and moves California closer to meeting the greenhouse gas reduction target of 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030 as laid out in Executive Order B-30-15 issued by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. in April 2015.

The State of California has shown tremendous political leadership and conviction on climate change over the years, and the need to take action is as urgent as ever,” said David Rosenheim, Executive Director of The Climate Registry. “We commend the 2015 Cool Planet recipients for their outstanding achievements in energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and for demonstrating to other organizations that doing the right thing also makes good business sense.

This gives us a chance to say thank you to an outstanding group of customers for implementing projects that save energy, money and our environment,” said Lisa Cagnolatti, SCE vice president of the Business Customer Division.

Thank you to all SCE business customers who submitted applications for the 2015 Cool Planet Award.
