Voluntary Reporting
The Registry is the premier voluntary GHG registry in North America. While the Registry will work to support various state/provincial, regional, and federal mandatory GHG reporting programs, many organizations are interested in going beyond what is required to be reported to provide a comprehensive North American emissions footprint to the public.
The Voluntary Reporting Process
The Registry’s reporting program, while voluntary to join, is rigorous in its reporting requirements to ensure that meaningful high quality data is reported. Voluntary reporting is a three step process:
- Calculate. Each year all Members must calculate all GHG emissions (CO2, CH4, N2O, PFC, HFC, and SF6) from operations in North America (Canada, United States, and Mexico) using the General Reporting Protocol.
- General Reporting Protocol – The Registry’s reporting requirements.
- Industry Specific Reporting Protocols. To be developed.
- Report. Members must enter their GHG emissions into the Climate Registry Information System (CRIS), an online GHG calculation, reporting, verification tool that enables public access to verified emission reports.
- Verify. After calculating and reporting GHG emissions, all Members must obtain third party verification annually to ensure the accuracy of the data.
- Verification – More information about verification.
- General Verification Protocol – The Registry’s verification requirements. Available April 2008.
- Industry Specific Verification Protocols. To be developed
Member Services
The Registry offers technical assistance to help all Members successfully complete their annual GHG emissions reports by the program deadlines.
For example: 2010 emissions must be reported in CRIS by June 30, 2011 and verified by December 15, 2011.
| Annual Reporting Deadlines | |
| Input GHG Emissions Data in CRIS | June 30 |
| Verify Emissions Data | December 15 |
Members taking advantage of batch verification for the 2010 emissions reporting year must adhere to the following deadlines to qualify for the batch rate:
| Emissions Year 2010 Batch Reporting Deadlines | |
| Submit CRIS report to Alliant Environmental | April 4, 2011 |
| Verify batch emissions data | July 18, 2011 |

- Reporting Helpline: Registry staff answer reporting questions at 1(866) 523-0764 and help@theclimateregistry.org
- Reporting Materials: To purchase additional bound copies of the protocols or the Registry’s messenger bags, please mail the TCR Product Order Form to the Registry with your payment.
- Member Trainings The Climate Registry offers free trainings to Climate Registry Members; the registration fee for non-Members is $100. Trainings will be offered as a component of a three-part series:
First: Reporting Basics
Building an Inventory for Reporting to The Climate Registry, Part I: Boundaries This forty-five minute session is designed to provide new Climate Registry Members a general overview of the basic principles of defining the geographic, operational and organizational boundaries of an organization’s greenhouse gas emissions. This online training also includes a brief overview of the Registry’s program and reporting requirements.Building an Inventory for Reporting to The Climate Registry, Part II: Data Collection and CalculationThis forty-five minute session is designed to provide new Climate Registry Members a general overview of the basic principles of calculating emissions, collecting data and using simplified estimation methods (SEMs). This online training also includes a brief overview of the Registry’s program and reporting requirements.
Second: Using The Climate Registry’s GHG reporting software CRIS
Using CRIS 3.0 to Report your GHG Emissions is designed for to provide training on navigating and using The Climate Registry’s emissions reporting software, CRIS, to input your GHG emissions. This online training includes a brief overview on how to integrate the Registry’s program and reporting requirements when reporting using CRIS.- Verification trainings, workshops, conference calls, and other Member events will be also be offered during the verification season and as Member needs arise.
- Trainings are free for Climate Registry Members; the registration fee for non-members is $100.
- Public Reports: Once data is successfully verified, the Registry will publish annual emissions
reports to the public through its CRIS websiteIf you are a Member or prospective Member and have questions, please contact us at help@theclimateregistry.org.
