What’s New

How The Registry is Advancing Leadership in Carbon Management

The Registry is continually looking for new ways to help companies, non-profits, government agencies and institutions meet their carbon management goals and increase their competitiveness. The following are a few of things we’re doing to support and encourage corporate leadership in carbon reporting and reductions.

Climate Registered Program: Recognizing Leadership in Reducing Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions

Climate Registered™ Silver, Gold and Platinum

We are currently piloting a new leadership program that recognizes organizations that are voluntarily reducing their GHG emissions in a credible way. Organizations that meet the program criteria will be eligible to be awarded Climate Registered Silver, Gold or Platinum status.

Draft program parameters are available for review here. Program requirements are expected to be finalized in fall 2011.

New GHG Accounting Standards

Corporate Value Chain Accounting

We have been working in collaboration with the World Resources Institute (WRI) to help shape the development of the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Accounting and Reporting Standard (expected release: September 2011). As part of this effort, The Registry convened a focus group of food production companies in order to explore the challenges and opportunities of reporting scope 3 GHG emissions within the food processing sector. A summary of current GHG accounting initiatives in the food and beverage sectors is available here.

For more information on beginning to manage your organization’s corporate value chain emissions, see the U.S. EPA’s Climate Leaders program publication: Managing Supply Chain Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Lessons Learned for the Road Ahead (Dec. 2010).

Community-Scale GHG Accounting

The Registry sits on the ICLEI Local Governments for Sustainability USA (ICLEI) Steering Committee, which is charged with determining how to best design a new Community Protocol to meet the needs of local governments that are working to inventory GHGs at the community level.  The Registry also manages the program-neutral Local Government Operations (LGO) Protocol, which provides general purpose local governments customized guidance to calculate their scope 1 and scope 2 GHG footprints. The LGO Protocol was developed through a joint effort of the California Climate Action Registry (CCAR), the California Air Resources Board (CARB), ICLEI, and The Registry.

Climate Change Data in Financial Reports

The Registry is a member of the Climate Disclosure Standards Board (CDSB), which was formed at the 2007 annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in response to increasing demands for standardized reporting guidelines on the inclusion of climate change information in mainstream financial reports. Currently the CDSB Technical Working Group is developing a Climate Change Reporting Framework, which is intended to help elicit what information is most valuable to investors in assessing how climate change affects the strategy, performance and prospects of organizations.

Resources for Mandatory Reporting

U.S. GHG Regulation Clearinghouse

The Registry is developing a web-based clearinghouse tool that will catalog mandatory and voluntary reporting requirements. The tool will help U.S. organizations gain a better understanding of the information needed to report to federal, regional and state mandatory reporting programs as well as voluntary GHG reporting programs so they can easily identify the requirements in different jurisdictions and prepare their data accordingly. The Registry is currently conducting a survey to identify what functionality would be most valuable to users. Key stakeholders can participate in The Registry’s Clearinghouse Development Workgroup, which is leading the development of this resource.

Simplifying the Reporting Process

GHG Sync

We are launching a new tool that will enable organizations to upload data to The Registry’s reporting software, the Climate Registry Information System (CRIS), without having to manually enter each source and facility. To use GHG Sync, you will need to map your data to an XML schema and then submit it to CRIS using a web interface. If you are interested in beta testing GHG Sync please contact Craig Wong at cwong@theclimateregistry.org.

Verification Standards

The Sustainability Consortium

As a leader in establishing third-party verification practices, The Climate Registry was asked to participate in The Sustainability Consortium’s Assurance Working Group. The Sustainability Consortium is an independent organization of diverse global participants who work collaboratively to build a scientific foundation that drives innovation to improve consumer product sustainability through all stages of a product’s life cycle. The Assurance Working Group’s objective is to ensure that product-level sustainability measurement and reporting standards developed through The Sustainability Consortium are objective, measureable, complete, relevant, verifiable, and comparable.
